Comics I love to read (over and over and over again)

Same as books, there are a few comic series which I love to read repeatedly and never get tired of. I still laugh at certain parts and think, “I love this comic” each time I read it.

One of my favourites is a local comic called Lat (named after the cartoonist). The ones I like best are those that are based on his childhood memories. It features growing up in a small kampung (village), as well as the different cultures and life in Malaysia during the 50s.. It is very simple but I suppose I relate to it most because I remember playing those games he played, eating the food he ate and running around with friends of different races without caring what skin colour we all are. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn more about the Malaysian culture (although it may be a bit tricky considering since he relates most of his stories from a Malaysian point of view).

Of course, there are also other stories which features him leaving home for the first time. One of my other favourites is the one where he travels to the UK and then to Japan. His way of expressing his thoughts through the cartoon characters are hilarious, although always very diplomatic.

Another comic book that I love is Asterix. My Ma used to borrow them from her school’s library and we would take turns reading them. Although she brought back Tin Tin as well, I always preferred Asterix. It was funny and I could just imagine all of them coming to life and me stuck in the adventures, watching it all happen before my very eyes. It was highly engaging for a child of 11.

There are other comics which my dad used to buy for us like MAD and comics which my aunt from UK would bring back like Beano. However, I never quite understood MAD. I think it could be that I was too young back then to relate to it. I found Beano interesting but at the same time, it was quite English. And of course, who can forget Archie? Although I must say, the double digest size these days could easily pass for a single digest 17 years ago.

About 10 years ago, I discovered a new comic called Footrot Flats. I was checking out secondhand bookstores and saw this comic which I picked up, flicked a few pages, and found it quite amusing. I have been hooked ever since. It helped that it only cost $2 each at the bookstore. I have about 15 of them at home which I lovingly read through every now and then.

I love comics. It’s easy to read, the cartoons are hilarious and the stories simple. They never fail to bring a smile to my face :)

Note: Wasn’t sure if I could post up pictures so decided not to.

Oooh I love Asterix and Tin Tin too! I bought quite a number of Asterix comics when in the UK, when they were on sale. Love the wordplay when it comes to names.
